When I first received this item I thought it too heavy. After giving it to the patient she had a different perspective: the weight gave her a sense of balance and mass and the smaller width gave her access to narrower situations including some tight maneuvering in bathroom areas. It is a heavier steel item and when collapsed, a heavy item to lug but it is manageable and as previously mentioned, for the patient, the weight is advantageous....it works as a bowling pin, heavy on the bottom. The balloon wheels work well with thresholds once the patient learns to press down on the handles to slightly raise the front wheels: they have to be taught this technique, they do not come by it naturally.
